Neck Lift Recovery By Nimit D on August 25, 2011

neck lift recoveryAging and weight loss can cause your body to undergo a number of changes. With aging, wrinkles and lines become more likely, your metabolism slows down, and the skin is prone to sag a bit in some areas. With weight loss, you may lose so much weight that your skin will not properly form around your slimmer new frame. (This is particularly common with people who are obese or morbidly obese who lose a lot of weight, whether by surgical methods or natural means.)

Changes to the Appearance of the Neck

One part of the body that is quite effected by aging, weight gain, and weight loss is the neckline. When you gain a lot of weight, the neck can really store up a good deal of fat, and as you grow older, the skin in the neck can start to sag and resemble the wattle on some birds. Generally these issues of contour will not respond to diet and exercise given the nature of skin laxity, so the best option for effective care is to undergo surgery--specifically neck lift surgery.

Comprehensive Facial Plastic Surgery

When you come to our Ottawa, Ontario plastic surgery center, Dr. Peter Brownrigg will determine the best facial plastic surgery option that will meet your unique needs. If you require a necklift, he will also consider the possibility of other facial lifts and whether or not these would benefit you. Ultimately this decision will be your own, of course, and not everyone who undergoes a neck lift will require an Ottawa, Ontario facelift or brow lift.

About Neck Lift Surgery

We’d like to take a moment right now to describe in brief the neck lift surgery procedure and what the recovery process is like.

A neck lift is a generally straightforward facial plastic surgery option. For the most part, the incisions for a neck lift will be hidden behind the ears and under the chin, which means that any post-surgical scarring will be minimal and difficult to spot. During the surgery, the surgeon will be able to remove excess skin and excess fat through these incisions sites while also adjusting muscle structure as needed. Liposuction may be used to remove any problematic pockets of fat in the chin and lower jaw area.

The First Days of Recovery and Healing

In the first day or two after neck lift surgery, patients should generally remain in bed and at rest. Discomfort in the neck is common, so patients will likely find it uncomfortable to twist their head as usual. It’s recommended that patients arrange for a friend or family member to be present in the first few days after surgery to help around the house as needed.

The Following Weeks of Recovery and Healing

Even though patients should be able to return to work in roughly a week or two, it’s recommended that they refrain from any strenuous physical activity or heavy lifting for a few weeks after surgery. Strain in the neck area can be painful and can affect healing time and experience. If patients experience any undue pain or anything peculiar while recovering from surgery, it’s important that they speak with us right away so these matters can be addressed in a timely fashion.
