Rhinoplasty Explained

Rhinoplasty (more popularly known as a "nose job") is a cosmetic surgery procedure designed to correct aesthetic and functional concerns that affect the nose and its internal structures. There are two types of rhinoplasty: open and closed. During your consultation, Dr. Brownrigg will decide which technique is right for you based on your individual issues.

This is considered a relatively complex cosmetic surgery procedure, and it pays to choose a reputable surgeon who frequently performs rhinoplasty.

Thousands of People Have Considered Nose Reshaping Surgery

How do I know if rhinoplasty is right for me?

Can nose reshaping help with my breathing?

We Offer Both  Cosmetic and Functional Rhinoplasty

Dr. Brownrigg offers an array of rhinoplasty techniques that can transform your nose, including small implants and the alteration of the nostril size or angle between your nose and upper lip. Cosmetic rhinoplasty can be performed in conjunction with surgery to improve your breathing by correcting a deviated septum or reducing airway obstruction. Rhinoplasty is a popular procedure—and for good reason, as it provides a subtle but significant improvement in your facial balance.

Rhinoplasty implants
Small biocompatible implants might be recommended in some cases.

Are You Unhappy with the Results of a Previous Treatment?

Although many plastic surgeons perform rhinoplasty, not all surgeons possess the level of expertise and surgical care that Dr. Brownrigg has. If you are unhappy or uncomfortable with the results of a previous nasal surgery, Dr. Brownrigg can perform a revision surgery. Because revision surgery is much more difficult, you need an expert level of care that only a trusted facial cosmetic surgeon like Dr. Brownrigg can provide.

I've heard that fillers can improve the shape of my nose...

Fillers Can Improve Minor Concerns But Surgery Is a Better Option for Most

Fillers and injectables are primarily used to add volume to areas of your nose that lack structure. But if you want to reduce the size of your nose, enhance the shape of your nose, or improve your breathing, plastic surgery is the only way to effectively correct these concerns. Additionally, while fillers and injectables need to be touched-up every few months, the results of a plastic surgery procedure are often permanent.

If you are interested in non-surgical optionsDr. Brownrigg can evaluate your concerns and provide honest feedback.

Preparing  for Your Procedure

We know that the idea of surgery can seem intimidating. But our Ottawa team is committed to ensuring that your surgery is safe and successful.

In addition to closely following the list of pre-operative instructions provided by our plastic surgeon, you can:

  • Stay in good health
  • Refrain from smoking
  • Maintain realistic expectations

Our team will closely evaluate your overall health to ensure that you are a good candidate for surgery.

So what happens during a rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty Is  an Outpatient Procedure

Successful treatment begins with a frank discussion of what you hope to change about your nose and the best way to make your nose complement your other features. Dr. Brownrigg is an Ottawa surgeon who understands the importance of listening carefully to what patients want to accomplish, addressing their concerns before surgery, and then utilizing his high degree of surgical expertise to deliver precisely what they wish for.

On the Day of Your Procedure

Before beginning, our team will provide anesthesia to ensure you remain comfortable and relaxed during your treatment.

Dr. Brownrigg will create incisions either inside the nose (closed rhinoplasty) or outside the nose (open rhinoplasty) based on the type of changes you wish to achieve.

Dr. Brownrigg will then augment or reduce the bone and cartilage to alter the shape of your nose. Finally, he will close the incisions.

What Is Rhinoplasty?

Dr. Peter Brownrigg, who serves Ontario and surrounding communities, describes what a nose job (rhinoplasty) is and the two reasons that patients may need one: functional or aesthetic.

What is the difference between an open and closed rhinoplasty?

The Location of the Incisions Is the Main Difference

With a closed rhinoplasty, Dr. Brownrigg creates incisions completely inside the nostrils while an open rhinoplasty also requires incisions between the nostrils. In general, closed rhinoplasty is less invasive and has a shorter recovery time. However, open rhinoplasty is often used for more complex cases as it allows for a greater range of modifications and more comprehensive results.

How long will it take to recover?

Most Patients Return  to Normal Activities in About Two Weeks

When performed by a qualified facial cosmetic surgeon such as Dr. Brownrigg, the risks of rhinoplasty are low. Patients recover quickly and are typically back to work within a week, returning to their normal routine within two to three weeks.

It may be difficult to breathe normally for a few days as your nose will be bandaged and packed. Swelling and bruising will occur but will soon pass, leaving little to no visible scarring and revealing your new nose.

So what kinds of results can you expect after surgery at our Ottawa practice?

Are the results of rhinoplasty permanent?

Changes to Your Nose Should Remain Fairly Consistent

You should notice minor changes to your facial features as swelling subsides and your new nose stabilizes. However, it may take about a year for you to see your final results after a rhinoplasty, especially if Dr. Brownrigg uses an open technique

In general, the effects of nose reshaping surgery are fairly stable. However, aging can affect your results. Consistent sun protection and a healthy lifestyle can help preserve the effects of your rhinoplasty procedure.

For the best results, you should choose a highly qualified surgeon...

Precision Is Imperative

"Because the nose often balances an individual's facial structure, it's imperative that plastic surgeons are meticulous when performing the surgery.  " The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery

How much does rhinoplasty at your Ottawa practice cost?

The Cost of Rhinoplasty Can Vary Significantly

The imperfections or structural issues that you want to correct will influence the degree of surgery needed. A more extensive procedure will typically cost more. Because of the highly personalized nature of rhinoplasty, the cost is calculated on an individualized basis. Elective rhinoplasty procedures are not covered by insurance. However, if you are undergoing the procedure for health reasons, a portion of your treatment may be covered. You may consider researching third-party financing options to help cover your costs.

What else will affect the cost of my treatment?

Additional Cost Factors Include:

Pre-Surgery Examinations

Depending on your circumstances, pre-surgery testing and examinations may be needed to evaluate breathing issues.

Surgical Fees

The greater your surgeon's experience, credentials, and reputation, the more you can expect to pay. However, choosing an excellent surgeon is more likely to result in the outcome you desire. Anesthesia and facility fees will also affect the total cost of your surgery.

Recovery Necessities

During recovery, you may need prescriptions and other amenities to aid in your recovery.

Paying for Your Cosmetic Care

Because cosmetic surgery is not covered by insurance, it can be a significant expense for most patients.

To make surgery more affordable, Dr. Brownrigg in Ottawa accepts financing through third-party lenders. These groups offer flexible, low-interest payment plans that can help patients achieve the look they want without exceeding their budget.

Rhinoplasties performed by Dr. Brownrigg are safe and can tremendously improve your self-image, self-esteem, and facial proportion and harmony.
