How to Protect Your Skin During Summer
By Peter Brownrigg on March 31, 2012
The summer is just around the corner, and if you want to look your best, it’s important that you take care of your skin. Sure, getting a little sun is good, but getting too much may mean many aesthetic problems down the road as well as an increased risk of skin cancer. The team at our Ontario plastic surgery center would like to go over some basic tips about protecting your skin so you can look great and remain healthy when the summer arrives.
Why the Sun is Harmful to Your Skin
Sunlight can add color to your skin, but it can also do damage at a microscopic level over time. The ultraviolet (UV) rays of the sun will gradually cause the elastin in your skin to break down. This can cause your skin to sag, wrinkle, or stretch over time, with decreased ability to restore appearance. In addition, this UV exposure makes you more susceptible to developing cancer. Rather than visit a plastic surgeon in Ottawa to help address the aesthetic issues related to sun damage, there are several easy steps that you can take for a better appearance.
Avoid Excessive Sun Exposure
You don’t always have to be out in the sun all day. It’s a good idea to avoid long-term sun exposure when outdoors. This can mean simply getting under some shade every now and then or perhaps even taking a parasol with you to block direct sun exposure.
Wear Sunblock Whenever You Go Out
This is a great idea any time of the year. Using sunblock will help prevent sun damage from occurring, meaning that your skin won’t be as affected by the sun while you’re outdoors. Rather than getting an Ontario facelift, get some sunblock and keep the wrinkling and sagging away.
Wear Long Sleeves When You Can
The arms and legs can both be severely affected by the sun. When possible, it’s a good idea to have a loose or thin shirt handy to cover up those arms. Sometimes keeping the legs covered can keep them looking great down the road as well.
Wear a Hat While You're Outdoors
There’s no need to get a forehead lift if you’re keeping your forehead covered. Yes, just wearing a hat can make a major difference to your overall appearance. Ideally get one with a wide brim so you can hide your face from the harmful rays of the sun.
Sunglasses are a Great Idea
The area around the yes is particularly sensitive to sun damage. To help keep the UV rays from affecting the eye area, be sure to have sunglasses on when you’re out in the sun. The sunglasses will also protect your eyes from UV rays, reducing your chances of developing cataracts later in life.
