3-D Imaging for Rhinoplasty: Preview Your New Appearance By Peter Brownrigg on June 19, 2018

Patients unhappy with the appearance of their nose can benefit from rhinoplasty at our Ottawa, ON cosmetic practice. Before undergoing this type of treatment, one of the most common concerns patients have is how they will look when recovery is complete.

Fortunately, advances in technology now allow patients to preview what their nose will look like after the rhinoplasty procedure. Here, we discuss 3-D imaging for rhinoplasty, and explore how this innovative technology can offer our patients peace of mind.

Rhinoplasty: A Brief Overview

Colloquially referred to as a nose job, rhinoplasty can reshape and contour the nose for a more balanced and uniform appearance. There may be several different reasons why patients pursue this type of cosmetic treatment.

For example, rhinoplasty can address a:

  • Low bridge or high bridge
  • Dorsal hump
  • Bulbous nose tip
  • Asymmetric nose tip
  • Droopy nose
  • Crooked nose
  • Broken nose
  • Deviated septum
  • Wide or narrow nose
  • Upturned nose
  • Wide or collapsing nostrils

3-D Imaging with VECTRA®

At our practice, Dr. Brownrigg utilizes VECTRA® 3-D Imaging to virtually demonstrate how the nose will look following rhinoplasty. This software offers a side-by-side comparison to simulate the changes that this type of cosmetic surgery can offer.

In addition to showing patients a before and after composite, VECTRA can also help patients determine specific aesthetic goals. This is particularly helpful for those who desire a change but are not sure exactly where to start.

How Does 3-D Imaging for Rhinoplasty Work?

To obtain digital diagnostic images, photos are taken with a 3-D camera. Once this is complete, the files are uploaded to our computer and manipulated with our Sculptor™ software program. There, the compiled images can be manipulated to demonstrate the eventual outcome of treatment.

Keep in mind that the goal of rhinoplasty is to bring balance and symmetry to the entire face, not just the nose. Therefore, 3-D imaging can make it much easier to visualize potential results as they relate to full facial aesthetics. Even better, the software program can tweak the images until the desired effect is achieved. Then, Dr. Brownrigg can use the final image to appropriately reshape the nose during surgery.

How Communication and 3-D Imaging Go Hand in Hand

Before the advent of 3-D imaging, patients had to simply trust that their doctors understood their cosmetic goals. With today’s advanced technology, patients can actually see what their doctors are thinking.

With 3-D imaging, patients can sit down with the doctor and explore a number of aesthetic options. This enhances communication between the surgeon and the patient and also increases the accuracy of treatment.

Computer imaging has truly changed the way we perform plastic surgery. This technology allows the patient to review and visually confirm the cosmetic changes he or she desires, while also providing the doctor with a solid and detailed treatment plan.
